The Great Mosque of Kairouan is the third most important Islamic monument in the Arab world after Mecca and Jerusalem. The shrine of the companion Abu Zamaa al-Balawi, known as Sidi al-Sahbi, is located in the city of Kairouan, Tunisia. He died in 34 AH (1348 CE) and had come to Africa as a conqueror ten years before Kairouan was named. His shrine is considered one of the most important religious landmarks in the region, where Tunisians celebrate religious occasions such as the Prophet's birthday, weddings, and circumcisions. It is known for its magnificent architecture and tranquil atmosphere, attracting visitors seeking spirituality and Islamic traditions.
Bir Barouta is a historical Tunisian archaeological landmark located in the old city of Kairouan, in the center of the country. It is considered one of the oldest and last legendary wells in Kairouan, dating back to 796 AD. Restored in 1690, it is surrounded by many legends, including the belief that it is linked to the Zamzam Well in Mecca. Located in the heart of the old city, this landmark is a prominent historical and cultural symbol.
An open-air museum listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, its winding alleyways, historic monuments, and traditional souks reflect Kairouan's rich past and its importance in Arab and Muslim art and architecture. The old city offers an immersive experience of Kairouan's glorious history.
